Derek graduated high school from Bishop James Mahoney High School in Saskatoon in 1996.  He then began to study for a BA in History and English at the University of Saskatchewan while in the Infantry Reserve back in 2000-2001.  Derek finished his degree at the University of Auckland in New Zealand where he also completed a postgraduate Diploma in Teaching Secondary and went on to spend a couple of years teaching English in New Zealand.

Upon moving back to Canada in 2006 Derek quickly completed his studies to become a financial advisor. After working for nearly a year for Don Bristow as a marketing assistant Derek took a position working directly with Brian Mallard as his Executive Assistant and financial planner apprentice.

Derek and his wife Karla are both avid sports enthusiasts and are both very active all year with a variety of activities such as: crossfit, slow pitch, volleyball, skiing, and hiking through the mountains.  They are also both very active in their church and in their community.
